SUMMARY

New book of Professor Lyudmyla Yur'yeva,MD, PhD and Tatyana Bol'bot, MD, PhD "Computer addiction: formation, diagnosis,correction and prophylaxis" is dedicated to the important question of theinappropriate computer use.

The Internet has created an exciting newworld of information and communication for anyone with access to onlineservices. Computer (or Internet) addiction is a relatively new dependency forUkraine, and a hazard that will not cause obvious anxiety in population andtherefore is not estimated by its appearance. So there are not consideredproblems, which arise up through laudation of fantastic possibilities of thepersonal computers and the Internet. The indicated forms of dependency abovemostly spread in the environment of teenagers and young people. The report inthe beginning of 2004 revealed that 3.8 million people (8% of Ukrainepopulation) used Internet in comparison with 2.5 millions (5% population) in2003. Thus amount of sites increased by 4.2%, and went up to 28.8 thousands andthe number of providers offering Internet access reached 300. These rates havea remarkable tendency of making a progress.

Computer dependency has allcharacteristics of an alcohol dependency, psychoactive matters and shows updifferent abnormal psychopathological disorders of no psychotic and psychoticregisters including personal disorders what quite often results in considerablesocial misadaptation of the indicated persons.

Correlations in order of formation ofpsychopathology at computer dependency are not studied enough and thereforeinformation relating to this issue is added, ambiguous and contradictory.Absence of the theoretical base of computer dependency development,appropriately teams up with no systematic character, weak structure and as aresult, low efilciency of rehabilitation of such patients offered by ourscience. In the same queue, this problem in Ukraine is on the stage of thedevelopment.

In this connection, the determination ofthe risk factors of computer addiction and a research of clinical dynamics ofthis pathology formation require a special estimate. Exposure ofclinical

and psychopathological structure of computerdependency, its results and development will optimize not only criteria ofdiagnosis, differential diagnosis and systematizationof this type of addictionbut also principles of its therapy and prophylaxis.

In Chapter 1 authors shows the way of formation of computer subculture fromcuneiform writing to internet (historical and psychologicalaspects).

In Chapter2 authors discuss theproblem of addictive behavior. It was paid attention to factors that initiatethe development of addictions and to pathological propensity togambling.

Chapter3 gives us overview of the worldwide research thatreviews the influence of uncontrolled computer activity. Authors presentapproaches of different researchers, psychological mechanisms of interactionsbetween person and computer, analyses the spread of this problem among youngpeople.

In chapter 4 the results of investigation of 463 pupils that study computertechnologies a lot in lyceums of physic-mathematic and informatics type permitto determine risk factors and risk group of development of computer addiction,peculiarities of computer activity (duration, experience, preferable kind ofactivity, feelings, influence of computer on education, work, family andothers) and create program of primary prophylaxis of computer addiction.Authors describe symptoms at first stage as well as factors that provokecomputer dependency. In work the psychological features of persons of young ageare explored on the first stage of computer addiction formation.

In chapter5 on the base of a complexclinical-psychopathological and psychological examination of 38 patients withdifferent forms of mental pathology (F 91.1 -91.2, F 06.4 -07, 70 and others)(1CD-10) that have computer addiction, clinical peculiarities of computeraddicts, social-demographical peculiarities and the dynamic of development ofcomputer addiction, and some psychological mechanisms of this pathology wereinvestigated. First on the basis of complex clinical psychopathological andpsychological research new findings were obtained in relation to the riskfactors, terms and clinical dynamics of computer dependencyformation.

It was determined that computer addictioncan be primary or symptomatic pathology. Mostly-symptomatic. Symptomaticcomputer dependency comorbides with other mental disorders.

Addictive mechanism of development ofcomputer addiction has been confirmed. Authors also described that computerdependency is formed in people having tendency to addictive behavior i.e.alcohol and substances abuse according to a dynamic of a>

Chapter6 is dedicated todiagnosis of computer addiction. Method of computer dependency diagnosis isdeveloped by authors and patented (patent of Ukraine on the invention (11)72366 A (51) 7 G09B3/00, G09B3/08, G09B3/00, A61B10/00 15.02.2005. Bui. №2)as the result of conducted research which allowed estimating risk group,diagnosing computer dependency and conducting prophylactic program ontime.

Chapter 7 dealswith prevention of computer addiction. Authors suggest new prophylacticprograms that include different technologies: informative, educational,technologies of employment, corrections of domestic relationships, religious;directed on the improvement of mental adaptation of students, interpersonalrelationships, on the acquaintance with personalities of development ofcomputer dependency and its possible consequences.

In Chapter8 first applications ofthe stage-by-stage psycho correction program are offered by authors in computeraddiction treatment, the practical use of which increased efficiency andreduced the term of computer dependency treatment. In general, complicationexplored to the phenomenon determines the necessity of application of bothmedical help and psychotherapy. Main place belongs to psychotherapy correctionthat focuses on a behavioral-cognitive approach. Authors concentrate thatsystem of correction based on principles of complexity, sequence,differentiations and stages.

Problems that authors raise in their bookare of great interest not only for the medical workers but also for theteachers, psychologists and parents who are interested in this topic. If we donot control computers, they will end up controlling us!
